Reconstruction Kurht Ranch Barn, 2007

In April of 2007, after a long awaited arrival, Schambers brothers pulled onto the Kuhrt Ranch ready to start the monumental job of restoring the Kuhrt Ranch barn. Len and Linus Schamber specialize in historic restoration and they were the general contractors for the job.

From Top to Bottom

The work began. It took 4 months to finish the first phase of the barn restoration. Many stabilizing cables and beams were installed. Many hours were spent restoring old hardware and doors. Some things had to be replaced. Computer, phone and fax time were spent making sure the Kansas State Historical Society approved the work being done.

A 2007 Barn Raising

Beams held the structure together while it was raised. The old foundation and walls had to go. After years of Northwest Kansas weather, the old concrete was starting to crumble.
The new foundation and walls should last another 100 years and save the barn.

After the new stucco and new doors were in place, the barn looks almost ready for use again ...almost...the windows still need restored and the siding repaired and painted.

Then phase two begins...the interior. That's another story.

The barn was a vital building for the operation of Kuhrt Ranch years ago. Pauline Kuhrt was very proud of her barn and what was raised in the barn.

We are all very excited about saving the Kuhrt Ranch barn and are excited to share it with our guests. Come and visit us soon.

Our barn was featured in "Barns of Kansas, A Pictorial History" by Robert L. Marsh.
